At The Cross God Stormed The Last Bastion Of The Self

The Heidelberg Catechism puts things in perspective:
Question 62: But why cannot our good works be the whole, or part, of our righteousness before God?
Answer: Because, the righteousness which can be approved of before the tribunal of God, must be absolutely perfect, and in all respects conformable to the divine law; and also, that our best works in this life are all imperfect and defiled with sin.
“At the cross”, says Gerhard Forde, “God stormed the last bastion of the self, the last presumption that you were going to do something for him.” Genuine freedom awaits all who stop trusting in their own work and start trusting in Christ’s work.

This is why so many Christians do not experience true freedom. The importance of their performance has been pounded into their brain by the church. As a result they live in fear and anxiety and never walk in freedom. If you want true freedom you must stop trusting in yourself and realize that even the very best you can do is tainted with sin and falls far short of God's righteousness. God wants you to trust him.

An Atheist Chastises Evangelicals Who Don’t Evangelize - Penn Jillette

A few years ago atheist Penn Jillette, of the magician duo, Penn & Teller, expressed indignation at evangelicals who don’t share their faith, asking, “How much do you have to hate somebody to believe everlasting life is possible and not tell them that?” Video, followed by transcript, below: “I’ve always said that I don’t respect people who don’t proselytize. I don’t respect that at all. If you believe that there’s a heaven and a hell, and people could be going to hell or not getting eternal life, and you think that it’s not really worth telling them this because it would make it socially awkward—and atheists who think people shouldn’t proselytize and who say just leave me along and keep your religion to yourself—how much do you have to hate somebody to not proselytize? How much do you have to hate somebody to believe everlasting life is possible and not tell them that? “I mean, if I believed, beyond the shadow of a doubt, that a truck was coming at you, and you didn’t believe that truck was bearing down on you, there is a certain point where I tackle you. And this is more important than that.”

The Nature Of Divine Sonship

"All those that are justified, God vouchsafed, in and for his only Son Jesus Christ, to make partakers of the grace of adoption: by which they are taken into the number, and enjoy the liberties and privileges of the children of God; have his name put upon them, receive the Spirit of adoption; have access to the throne of grace with boldness; are enabled to cry, Abba Father; are pitied, protected, provided for, and chastened by Him as by a Father; yet never cast off, but sealed to the day of redemption, and inherit the promises, as heirs of everlasting salvation. This is the nature of the divine sonship that is bestowed on believers." J.I. Packer, Knowing God, pg 206.

If you can understand this and believe it, reject any teaching that disagrees with this you will go a long way towards you living a stable joyful christian life. This is the problem in the church today so many christians do not know these truths and are not taught these truths. Go out and buy Packers book Knowing God its life changing.

The Freeness Of God's Love

"Nothing could possibly support my soul under the many agonies which oppressed me when on board, except a consideration of the freeness, eternity, and unchangeableness of God's love to me.
I need not fear the sight of sin when I have a perfect, everlasting righteousness wrought out for me by Jesus Christ....
May he enlighten me more and more to know and feel the mystery of his electing, soul-transforming love. There is nothing like it, to support us under present and all the various future trials. But the Lord has apprehended us and will not let us go. Men and devils may do their worst; our Jesus will allow nothing to pluck us out of His Almighty hands."

Redeemed From The Curse

“Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us, for it is written, ‘Cursed is everyone who is hanged on a tree.’” Galatians 3:13
“Our most merciful Father, seeing us to be oppressed and overwhelmed with the curse of the law . . . sent his only Son into the world and laid upon him all the sins of all men, saying, ‘You be Peter that denier, Paul that persecutor, blasphemer and cruel oppressor, David that adulterer, that sinner who ate the apple in Paradise, that thief who hung upon the cross, and briefly, you be the person who has committed the sins of all men. See therefore that you pay and satisfy for them.’”

Martin Luther, commenting on Galatians 3:13.

Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers - I Won't Back Down

The Purest Joy

“The purest joy in the world is joy in Christ Jesus.  When the Spirit is poured down, his people get very near and clear views of the Lord Jesus.  They eat his flesh and drink his blood.  They come to a personal cleaving to the Lord.  They taste that the Lord is gracious.  His blood and righteousness appear infinitely perfect, full and free to their soul.  They sit under his shadow with great delight. . . . They lean on the Beloved.  They find infinite strength in him for the use of their soul — grace for grace — all they can need in any hour of trial and suffering to the very end.”

Robert Murray M’Cheyne, preaching on Psalm 85:6, “Will you not revive us again, that your people may rejoice in you?”
