This is a U2 song that was covered by Starfield on a CD called "In The Name Of Love" - Artists United For Africa. God really used this song to minister to me when my dad died in 2004. Psalm 40 begins with "I waited patiently for the Lord; he inclined and heard my cry. The Psalm ends with, "You are my help and deliverer; do not delay, O my God". The song says, "How long to sing this song", I remember crying out to God "How long Lord until the pain stops". In a much broader sense how long Lord do we have to sing and cry for deliverance, when will you return for us? God hears our cry he puts a new song in our mouth, the blessings are to the person who makes the Lord their trust.
